Dr. Andy McIntosh, an award winning research scientist, came to speak at Fork Union Military Academy and in the Fluvanna area. Dr. McIntosh spoke on a number of issues throughout the county, and some cadets were able to get in on each of these informative meetings. Selected Middle School cadets were able to hear him speak on the intricacies of flight—an amazing overview of feathers, lungs and bone structure of birds. Selected Upper School cadets heard about biomimetics, a topic which is a specialty of Dr. McIntosh. He shared on the development of a system that mimics the minute combustion chamber of a bombardier beetle. Some math classes got to hear him discuss the Fibonacci Series and the golden ration. In addition, Dr. McIntosh spoke at both Middle School and Upper School Chapel sessions, and presented a talk on design and information at the Payne Greater Issues Forum on Friday, 10 February.
