Kevin Laue
Kevin Laue, a member of the 2008-09 FUMA postgraduate basketball team coached by Coach Fletcher Arritt, accepted a scholarship offer to play basketball for Manhattan College in New York. To the best of our knowledge and research, Kevin is the first one-handed player to receive a Division I college basketball scholarship.
Kevin's left arm was trapped by his umbilical cord in the womb, cutting off the blood supply and leaving him with only an upper left arm. The lost lower arm, however, prevented the cord from pulling tight around his neck and probably saved his life. Kevin counts himself as blessed rather than disabled.
At FUMA, Kevin averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game as a 6-10 center. Opponents often did not even realize he was missing a hand until after the game, so strong and skillful was his play on the court.
Kevin Laue also had the honor during the year of serving as the standard bearer for Lt. Gen. John Jackson, the school's president, at parades and ceremonies.
